With a sense of shock and deep sadness, we received the news of the sudden death of Dejan Tiago Stanković, our distinguished writer and social activist, who, among other things, acted as a member of the Main Board of the European Movement in Serbia.
Dejan Tiago will remain in the memory of all his friends, colleagues and numerous readers as an exceptional writer and person with a bright spirit and broad culture – a true European in Serbia and a Serb-Yugoslav in Europe. Through his entire life and work, Dejan Tiago brought together people and nations, especially of Serbian and Portuguese culture. Apart from being a writer of widely read novels, for which he received the European Literary Award, Dejan also established himself as an excellent translator. By translating significant literary works into Portuguese and Serbian, Dejan Tiago brought the greats of two literatures, such as Nobel laureates Ivo Andrić and Jozé Saramago, closer to Serbian and Portuguese readers.
Hearty and witty, Dejan Tiago Stanković belonged to the type of people who make this world more beautiful, cheerful and bright. He was a fighter against nationalism and extremism and stood up for European values, such as democracy, tolerance, and solidarity. He left us while at the peak of creative power and artistry, leaving behind an irreparable loss.
